PHI: It’s term you’ve perhaps heard in passing at the doctor’s office or in the office of your HR manager, but what does it actually mean?

PHI stands for protected or private health information.

It’s any personal information such as your name, birthday, social security number, or health diagnoses that ties you to a specific health insurance claim.

It’s as private as it sounds, and only you and your doctor – if you’re over the age of 18 – will have access to this medical information. If you would like your spouse or a loved one to have access to your PHI, you’ll need to speak to your doctor’s office so you can sign off on a PHI release form.

This will allow the doctor’s office to communicate with whoever you’ve listed on the release form regarding any of your personal medical information.
